History

From a family-owned blacksmith shop to a globally successful security company

In 1924, in the small town of Volmarstein, near Wetter an der Ruhr in Germany, August Bremicker and his sons laid the foundation for what would become ABUS. At a time of silent films, quiet streets, and technology still imagined as part of the future, they developed a padlock that would shape their destiny: the “Iron Rock.”

The first padlocks were designed and manufactured in the basement of the family home, in a highly competitive environment where many local blacksmiths offered similar products. Thanks to their commitment to quality and reliability, the company grew rapidly. In 1929, ABUS acquired its first production facility on Hegestraße in Volmarstein, a site that remains in operation to this day.

From the very beginning, ABUS has stood for security, reliability, and stability. What started as a family business has evolved into a global group of companies, setting high standards in security technology for nearly 100 years.

Today, ABUS offers one of the most comprehensive ranges of security solutions in the world—from basic padlocks for everyday use to high-security systems for industrial applications and landmark projects such as the Ritz-Carlton Berlin and the Diamond Tower in Dubai. The brand is also firmly established in the mobility and sports sectors, with bicycle helmets and the sponsorship of international cycling teams such as the Movistar Team.

ABUS remains true to its roots: a family-owned company combining tradition, innovation, and German quality to protect what matters most—anywhere in the world.
